Orange Magic Swords of Breaking

A recurring concern involves swords imbued with Orange magic. Investigation indicates that they behave like Goblin-crafted weapons from the Broken Lands, and will Break a person if wielded for long enough.

Examples include:

  • Captain Jones at the Plains of Gedden had one - he nearly arrested Gale for sparring with Lisatera, due to a pre-game run-in.
  • A wedding gift sword made in Orange, given to Princess Volga at her betrothal from a man from Orange. Princess Volga dismissed the party's concerns about her sword, agreeing only to look into it.
  • Swords referenced in connection with the sale to Queen Iona, noted by Stella in relation to a name given by Mario

The magic in these swords is similar to that found in Orange daggers and in goblin Orange magic creations. The wedding gift sword differed from the "Stabby Dagger of Stabbing" in that it lacked active magic. Stella eventually purified one of the strange non-Broken swords with 9 successes, dispelling it entirely. This was passed along to Bran via a spell set up by Diomarche.

Particularly Nefarious Daggers

Fatal Dagger

A magical weapon crafted through Orange magic using specialized Forge techniques that combine creation and destruction principles. The dagger was created by Mario in his workshop within the Centurion's household.

Creation and Properties

The dagger uses all three Orange disciplines in its creation. Its ingredients include:

  • Wyvern blood
  • Cyanide, arsenic, and hemlock
  • Other locally sourced materials

The crafting process links creation and Forge magic together to achieve lethality far exceeding standard bonus multipliers. The dagger is designed to destroy, with each use consuming the weapon itself—it can only be used a few times before destroying itself completely. After Vidan sanctified the stolen dagger, it became a x15 one-use weapon but lost its Fatal and Broken properties, disappointing Mario.

Theft and Recovery

A dagger was stolen from Mario's workshop. The theft appeared to be an inside job, with no signs of forced entry or rifling through the lab. Vivian, a staff member jealous of others in the household, stole the dagger at the suspected instigation of Carol, who is likely Bent. The dagger was discovered hidden in a secret compartment in a waiting room of the Lord's House, planted there by Vivian for later retrieval.

Managaratha's postcognition revealed a woman placing the dagger in the compartment within the last 48 hours. Julia identified this as Vivian. The Centurion concluded Vivian had stolen the dagger intending to use it over the following days, though it remains unclear whether Carol actively influenced her decisions or merely took advantage of her existing jealousy. The dagger was recovered before it could be used.

Dagger of Destruction

A separate Dagger of Destruction identified as made by Lisador was shown to Mario, who confirmed it was not his work. This dagger also demonstrates dangerous Orange craftsmanship and has compelled wielders toward violence. Gale has it now - is she more inclined towards violence? Hard to tell.

Selling Swords Plot

A note warns Managaratha to watch the sale of swords, suggesting it is part of a larger, ongoing scheme.
